Outpatient appointments at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital.
I am an award-winning eye surgeon specialising in cataract and retinal surgery, including floaters, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and retinal detachment surgery. I also manage patients for the medical treatment of retinal conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and blood vessel disorders of the retina.
I have undertaken eight years of advanced surgical and research training at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital. This included a two years retinal surgery fellowship where I performed complex retinal and cataract surgery.
I have research expertise in retinal disease with a particular focus on the application of gene and stem-cell therapy to treat blindness. I am currently chief surgeon for the first retinal gene therapy trial in Edinburgh. I have also been a senior investigator in the world's first gene therapy trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2015) and more recently I was lead author for the first European trial for stem-cell transplantation for inherited macular degeneration.
My NHS practice is currently based at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavillion in Edinburgh and I consult privately at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital.
