Dr Gill Townson

I bring over 20 years of experience as a consultant gastroenterologist, with a subspecialist focus on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). I am widely published in peer-reviewed journals and was awarded an MD for research into the impact of chronic ill health on patients living with IBD before taking up my consultant role. I also completed a post-fellowship sabbatical at McMaster University following completion of my UK training.

During my time in Shropshire, I played a key leadership role in the integration of gastroenterology services across the region, helping to develop a cohesive and patient-centred model of care. I established and expanded a comprehensive IBD service, including the development of a combined antenatal IBD clinic and a structured transition pathway to support adolescents moving into adult services, ensuring continuity and quality of care throughout the patient journey.

Alongside my clinical work, I have maintained a strong commitment to education and mentorship. I have been actively involved in the training and development of both undergraduate and postgraduate doctors, as well as contributing to regional and Royal College of Physicians educational initiatives. To support this, I undertook formal postgraduate training in medical education (PGCert, Keele University) and gained further qualifications in careers education from the University of Warwick. These experiences have strengthened my ability to support learners at all stages, fostering a culture of reflective practice, professional development and high standards of clinical care.

My current role encompasses a broad general gastroenterology practice, with a particular specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. I am experienced in both diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, delivering high-quality, patient-focused care across the full spectrum of gastrointestinal conditions, with a particular emphasis on IBD. In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I play an active role in mentoring and supervising trainees through structured teaching, clinical supervision and the promotion of reflective and safe practice.

I have extensive endoscopic experience, having performed more than 10,000 diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures throughout my career. I maintain a high level of procedural competence and quality by continuing to undertake two to three endoscopy lists each week. I also conduct general and specialist IBD clinics three times per week and participate in an out-of-hours emergency GI bleed rota.

Outside of work, I lead a full and active life and, now that my three children are grown up, I have been able to pursue a wider range of personal interests. I am widely travelled and enjoy reading. I also have a longstanding passion for sport and regularly attend football, rugby and Formula 1 events. I feel fortunate to live in beautiful Cheshire, where I make the most of the surroundings by spending time outdoors and enjoying the fresh air.
