I was the first graduate of dietetics in the UK and have an impressive record of decorations from my professional association (BDA) in a career spanning some 30 years. I have practiced as a Dietitian at the Murrayfield Hospital since it opened in 1984.

After graduating, I began professional life as a Dietitian in gastroenterology; this was soon followed by promotion to Chief Renal Specialist and shortly afterwards to Area Dietitian. I then headed homeward to Edinburgh to take up my first of many teaching posts. Alongside teaching, my modest research profile and extensive clinical record continue to flourish, culminating in a number of key achievements including a successful PhD (nutritional status of haemodialysis patients treated at home), publications in the BMJ and a number of opportunities to present my work internationally (Boston, San Diego, Assisi, Madrid, Umea, Jerusalem).

I have recently designed the Nutrition Care web site for NES (www.nutritioncare.scot.nhs.uk. ) and was the architect of the national Nutrition module as part of the DOTS CPD framework for foundation doctors. I have also authored several textbooks, including a Blackwell best seller (Clinical Cases in Dietetics).

More recently, I was appointed to the position of Lead Specialist Dietitian with the bariatric service at the Spire Edinburgh Hospitals where I have developed the dietetic arm of the multi-disciplinary team supporting the client load of overweight and obese patients.

I have a range of interests, including power walking, theatre, music and water skiing. I am a district bridge master. I enjoy general knowledge quizzes and had a recent near death experience with Anne Robinson when I appeared on the on the Weakest Link. I am no stranger to television and radio work, appearing in my own show with the BBC and radio.

I am an accomplished and competitive cook; I have competed nationally and internationally winning various prestigious awards. Indeed, such is my interest in food that I carried out a scientific study (PhD) using a special recipe for bran muffins containing controlled ingredients!
