I graduated from Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany in 1983. I completed my Doctorate of Medicine (Dr med) there in 1987. I trained in neurology in Essen University Hospital and obtained a higher degree (Facharzt) in 1993.
I worked as a full-time NHS consultant for 15 years for the NHS Forth Valley Royal in Falkirk and Larbert undertaking general neurology clinics, MS clinics and a Huntington's disease clinic.
I provided the headache clinic at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience Edinburgh for three years and the 'First Seizure Clinic' for Forth Valley. I retired from my NHS post in February 2019 to focus on my private clinic.
