Dr Alakendu Sekhar

I have expertise across all aspects of general neurology, including stroke and epilepsy, with a particular interest in vascular neurology, “funny turns” and blackouts. I am dual‑certified in stroke medicine and serve as the Clinical Lead for Stroke Intervention at The Walton Centre, where I established the stroke thrombectomy service supporting patients across Cheshire and Merseyside.

I am committed to patient care and service development. In my first year as a consultant, I received a Clinical Excellence Award for designing the stroke intervention pathway for the Cheshire and Merseyside stroke network. I have also served as an adviser to the British Neurological Association’s stroke section.

Alongside my clinical work, I am actively involved in research and education. I am Deputy Lead at the NIHR‑funded Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre in Cheshire and Merseyside, where my research focuses on acute stroke therapies, including thrombolysis and thrombectomy. I am also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Medical School and a former Regional Advisor for the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

I am Chair of the multidisciplinary thrombectomy meeting for Cheshire and Merseyside at The Walton Centre and have previously held an advisory role for the Association of British Neurologists in stroke.

My clinical work includes the management of epilepsy, stroke and vascular neurological conditions.
