Orthoptic care for eye movement and vision problems

Orthoptists specialise in assessing and treating eye movement and vision problems. At Spire Healthcare we help patients of all ages overcome double vision, lazy eye, misalignment, and other visual difficulties to improve clarity, coordination, and quality of life

Why you might need it

Orthoptics is a specialty focused on diagnosing and treating disorders of eye movement, binocular vision (how your eyes work together), and visual function. Patients with double vision, lazy eye (amblyopia), strabismus (misalignment), or eye coordination problems often benefit from orthoptic assessment and are often referred by their optician or consultant.

Who will do it?

Our patients are at the heart of what we do and we want you to be in control of your care.

All of our orthoptists are fully qualified and benefit from working in our modern, well-equipped hospitals and clinics.

Before your treatment

We're here to help you every step of the way. You will have a formal consultation with the orthoptist of your choice. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and any concerns you might have.

Your orthoptist will discuss your medical history with you and perform a thorough assessment of your condition. They will also discuss with you whether they feel any other tests are needed.

With your permission our orthoptist will liaise with your GP, optician or consultant and provide a detailed discharge summary at the end of your treatment.

Visit our patient information page for more information on our facilities, parking and all those other important practicalities.

The procedure

Orthoptic treatment may involve:

  • Orthoptic assessment: Detailed evaluation of eye alignment, eye movement, focusing, and binocular vision
  • Vision therapy / eye exercises: Tailored exercises to improve eye coordination, tracking, convergence, and stereopsis
  • Prism therapy: Use of prism lenses to correct double vision or misalignment
  • Pre- and post-surgical orthoptic care: For patients undergoing eye muscle surgery, orthoptists help before and after surgery to optimise results.

Aftercare

Therapy plans are personalised, with regular reviews to monitor progress. In many cases, exercises or prism corrections can significantly improve visual symptoms and quality of life.
