Who will do it?

Our patients are at the heart of what we do and we want you to be in control of your care.

All of our Speech and Language Therapists are fully qualified and benefit from working in our modern, well-equipped hospitals and clinics.

Before your treatment

We're here to help you every step of the way. You will have a formal consultation with the therapist of your choice. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and any concerns you might have.

Your Speech and Language Therapist will discuss your medical history with you and also discuss whether they feel any other tests are needed.

With your permission the specialist will liaise with your GP or consultant and provide a detailed discharge summary at the end of your treatment.

The procedure

We understand that coming into a hospital or clinic and having investigations or treatment, even for a relatively straightforward treatment such dietetics can be a time of worry. Our highly trained Speech and Language Therapists will be there with you, every step of the way.

  • Assessment: An initial evaluation by a Speech and Language Therapist  (SLT) to diagnose articulation, language, cognitive-communication, voice, or swallowing issues.
  • Articulation therapy: Exercises to help improve clarity of speech sounds
  • Language intervention / cognitive-communication therapy: Activities to boost vocabulary, comprehension, memory, problem-solving and social communication.
  • Voice therapy: Techniques to modify pitch, volume, vocal quality, and breath control
  • Fluency therapy: For stuttering and other fluency disorders, working on pacing, phrasing, and strategies to reduce disfluency
  • Swallowing (dysphagia) therapy: Exercises and therapeutic techniques to improve safe swallowing.
  • Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC):  Use of communication boards or devices where verbal speech is very limited.

Aftercare

Therapy is tailored to individual patient needs and frequency depends on your goals and condition. Your therapist may teach you, and if relevant, teach family or caregivers to help you practice at home
