I specialise in the management of hip problems. I adopted minimally invasive, muscle sparing, direct anterior approach hip replacement in 2008 and am the most experienced UK surgeon in this technique. The great majority of my patients are able to leave hospital the day after their hip replacement and generally regain their independence more quickly than with other hip replacement techniques.
I qualified from Westminster Hospital, London in 1980. After house jobs at St Stephen's Hospital in Chelsea, Senior House Officer posts at University College Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, I completed a PhD thesis at Cambridge University. My specialist orthopaedic training was undertaken at the Whittington and Westminster Hospitals in London, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Colchester and Black Notley Hospitals in Essex and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
My NHS practice is based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). This is the UK’s highest volume joint replacement centre for hip and replacement. I have been SWLEOC’s Director of Research since the centre opened in 2004 and lead the academic surgical unit.
I was awarded a personal chair at St George’s University of London, in 2013. I was president of the International Society for Hip Preservation Surgery (ISHA) in 2016.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Professor Richard Field at Spire include:

I have established a research department and outcome programme. Since 2004, this research team has worked at both St Helier and the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (the EOC) to develop a world renowned research programme with many national and international collaborations. In 2013 I was awarded a personal Chair at St George’s, University of London in recognition of my work at St Helier and the EOC. I lecture widely and I am a regular invited faculty member at many national and international orthopaedic meetings. I continue to supervise MD(Res) and PhD students and I have regular UK and overseas visiting Fellows in my team.
