Specialises in

I qualified from Westminster Hospital, London in 1980. After house jobs at St Stephen's Hospital in Chelsea, Senior House Officer posts at University College Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, I completed a PhD thesis at Cambridge University. My specialist orthopaedic training was undertaken at the Whittington and Westminster Hospitals in London, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, Colchester and Black Notley Hospitals in Essex and the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. In 1994, I was appointed to St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a special interest in hip surgery. Since 2004, my NHS practice has been based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre where I am the Director of Research. I am one of the UKs most experienced practitioners in arthroscopic hip surgery, muscle sparing hip replacement and complex hip replacement. I undertake approximately 500 hip operations per year.Since 2008, I have regularly used the muscle sparing, direct anterior approach for my routine hip replacement surgery and I am a regular faculty member on national and international training courses for surgeons learning this technique. In 2011, I undertook the world’s first GMK Sphere knee replacement and I have been one of the key surgeons in the development of this new generation of knee replacement. I am keen to involve as many of my patients as possible in long term outcome studies to properly monitor their progress and better understand the results of our surgery.

I have established a research department and outcome programme. Since 2004, this research team has worked at both St Helier and the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (the EOC) to develop a world renowned research programme with many national and international collaborations. In 2013 I was awarded a personal Chair at St George’s, University of London in recognition of my work at St Helier and the EOC. I lecture widely and I am a regular invited faculty member at many national and international orthopaedic meetings. I continue to supervise MD(Res) and PhD students and I have regular UK and overseas visiting Fellows in my team.
