I specialise in laparoscopic general and upper GI surgery with a specific area of interest in gallstone disease, abdominal wall and groin hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and hiatus hernia. I also remove lumps and bumps in the body. I can also carry out key surgery for acute appendicitis and ruptured stomach or duodenal ulcers.

To date, I have performed over 500 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, over 150 laparoscopic inguinal and abdominal wall hernia repairs. Being a relatively new consultant in the NHS, I am still building upon these numbers in my current practice including laparoscopic anti-reflux and hiatus hernia surgery.

I have been a substantive consultant upper GI surgeon at the Sandwell Hospital, West Birmingham. My area of interest and expertise is in acid-reflux disease and hiatus hernias. My basic medical qualifications and surgical training were completed in India with further advanced surgical training in various hospitals in Yorkshire where I developed an interest and expertise in keyhole operations for gallstone problems, abdominal wall. I consolidated this experience with a year of training in an established UGI cancer and Bariatric unit at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham, Hull before getting my specialist GMC registration.

I am currently business rota manager for the surgical registrars and foundation year level doctors at the Sandwell Hospital, West Bromwich.

I am an educational and clinical supervisor to the speciality registrars and foundation year doctors.

Q & A

Gallbladder removal surgery: Procedure, benefits, risks and recovery

Mr Yogesh Kumar, Consultant Upper GI Surgeon, says if your gallstone symptoms do not improve with a change in diet or lifestyle, you will require surgery to remove your gallbladder as well as the gallstones.

It's keyhole surgery, which means you'll have a small cut on your abdomen, and it's a day case procedure performed under general anaesthesia, meaning you'll be in and out the same day and will be able to resume your normal activities within two weeks.
