Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in hernia repair, coloproctology, gallbladder surgery and also perform diagnostic procedures such as flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. I perform most of my procedures as day case surgeries or investigations.
I undertake a variety of hernia repair procedures including inguinal hernias, femoral hernias, umbilical hernias, abdominal wall incisional hernias and Spigelian hernias. I perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and laparoscopic abdominal surgery for benign conditions. I have been trained in coloproctology, and I perform surgery for haemorrhoids, anal fistulas and fissures.
I see patients with symptoms of hernia such as swellings in the groin, belly button and the abdominal wall. I also assess and investigate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, anal swelling, anal pain, changes in bowel habit (constipation and diarrhoea), abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
My primary medical training was at The University of Birmingham Medical School as an undergraduate and my surgical training commenced in London in 1998 and continued in the Southwest Thames training region (London Deanery) until my appointment at Worthing Hospital in 2009. I now work independently but still treat NHS patients as well as private patients.
I hold a Master of Laws in Medical Law (LLM) as well as my primary qualifications of MBChB (Bachelor of medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and MD (Doctor of Medicine). I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
My interest in medical law also encompasses a deep interest in patient safety. I hold the post of the medicolegal lead for the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and have held the posts of governance lead and medical examiner in the NHS. My medicolegal experience extends to being an independent expert witness for the GMC (General Medical Council).
I place great emphasis on communication, shared decision making and the discussion of options that lead to supported consent to treatment.
