I am a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in hip and knee surgery. Based in the West Midlands, I provide expert care at Spire Little Aston, Spire Parkway, and Spire South Bank Hospital. With over 15 years of experience, I am a leader in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery, helping patients regain mobility with precision and confidence.

I graduated with merit from Leicester-Warwick Medical School in 2004 and completed orthopaedic training on the Warwick Orthopaedic Training Programme. I then pursued advanced fellowship training at Oxford, a globally recognised centre for orthopaedic excellence. In 2013, I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I am a recognised expert in muscle-sparing hip surgery, which allows for faster recovery, reduced pain, and improved long-term function. I am also a leader in robotic-assisted joint replacement, using cutting-edge Mako technology to enhance surgical precision and optimise patient outcomes.

I am a specialist in minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, particularly using the Direct Superior Approach (DSA). This advanced technique is an evolution of traditional hip replacement methods, designed to minimise tissue damage and accelerate recovery.

What is the Direct Superior Approach (DSA)?

The Direct Superior Approach is a muscle-sparing technique for hip replacement surgery. Unlike conventional posterior or lateral approaches, DSA allows access to the hip joint without cutting key stabilising muscles or tendons. Instead, the surgeon makes a small incision just behind the hip, carefully working around essential structures rather than through them.

Benefits of The Direct Superior Approach:

  • Muscle preservation – The DSA avoids cutting the gluteus maximus and external rotator muscles, which are crucial for hip stability. This leads to better long-term function and reduces the risk of post-operative limp
  • Faster recovery – By preserving key muscle groups, patients experience less post-operative pain, reduced swelling, and quicker return to mobility. Many patients can walk unaided within days of surgery
  • Reduced risk of hip dislocation – The DSA maintains natural hip stability, lowering the risk of dislocation compared to traditional posterior approaches. This allows for greater confidence in movement after surgery
  • Smaller incision and improved aesthetics – The incision used in DSA is typically shorter and more discreet, reducing visible scarring and promoting faster wound healing
  • Less post-operative pain and reduced blood loss – With minimal soft tissue disruption, patients often require less pain medication and have lower intraoperative blood loss, reducing the need for transfusions
  • Quicker return to normal activities – Many patients regain mobility within weeks, returning to work, driving, and even engaging in sports sooner than with traditional hip replacement techniques

Why choose Mr Makrides for DSA hip replacement?

I am one of the leading specialists in The Direct Superior Approach in the West Midlands, offering this cutting-edge technique at Spire hospitals. My expertise in minimally invasive surgery, combined with my experience in robotic-assisted joint replacement, ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care with optimal recovery outcomes.

I previously served as Clinical Service Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust for seven years. This leadership role provided invaluable experience in:

  • Service development and innovation – Leading one of the UK's busiest orthopaedic departments gave me deep insight into optimising surgical pathways, improving efficiency, and ensuring patient-centred care. My experience in enhancing NHS services translates directly into my private practice, where I deliver seamless, high-quality surgical experiences
  • Complex case management – Overseeing orthopaedic services meant managing a wide spectrum of cases, from routine joint replacements to complex trauma and revision surgeries. My leadership in handling complex cases ensures that patients requiring challenging procedures receive care from an expert with extensive surgical experience
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration – Working closely with anaesthetists, physiotherapists, and specialist nurses, I developed a comprehensive approach to the entire patient journey. I integrate this team-based philosophy into my private practice, ensuring that every patient receives individualised, multidisciplinary care from preoperative assessment to post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Driving excellence in patient outcomes – As a leader in orthopaedics, I played a pivotal role in adopting cutting-edge surgical technologies and evidence-based practices. My passion for innovation is reflected in my expertise in robotic-assisted surgery, allowing for greater precision, reduced complications, and faster recovery for patients undergoing joint replacement
  • Training and mentorship – My leadership role allowed me to mentor and train the next generation of surgeons, refining my ability to communicate complex surgical concepts clearly. My patients benefit from this skill, as I take time to provide clear, honest, and informative consultations to help them make confident decisions about their treatment

This extensive leadership experience has shaped myself into not just a skilled surgeon, but a trusted expert in the field of orthopaedics — one who prioritises safety, efficiency, and innovation. Patients can be confident they are in the hands of a surgeon who has helped shape orthopaedic care at the highest level.
