MBBS, MRes, FRCS(Ed) ORL-HNS, DipM
I have been a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust since 2019.
I specialise in otology (ear surgery), neurotology (disorders of hearing and balance) and lateral skull base (complex problems deep to the ear at the base of the brain). I perform around 150 major ear and skull base surgeries annually including surgeries for cholesteatoma, hearing reconstruction, and perforated ear drum repair. I am experienced in a range of techniques including minimally invasive and endoscopic approaches for ear surgery.
I am also experienced in managing the breadth of general ENT problems in adults and children and regularly perform tonsillectomy, grommet surgery, septoplasty for deviated nasal septum, sinus procedures, and nosebleed treatment.
As a Consultant at Newcastle Hospitals, I am a core ENT member of various multidisciplinary teams delivering first-rate care for complex ear disease, skull base surgery (including vestibular schwannoma, NF2, paraganglioma), balance problems, and hearing implants (bone conduction and middle ear).
I completed undergraduate and postgraduate training in Newcastle upon Tyne, London, and New Zealand. I have gained experience in ENT rotating working across major teaching hospitals in the North-East.
I was awarded a major fellowship in otology and lateral skull base surgery at University Hospital Birmingham and a TWJ short visiting otology fellowship, providing me with specialist training in complex otology, hearing implants, and skull base surgery.
I have a particular interest in hearing and balance problems and foster research interests in hearing loss and Ménière’s disease. I am the lead author on several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
As an ENT Consultant at Newcastle Hospitals, I am the surgical lead on training courses for local trainees and international delegates in advanced otology, I teach medical students, and mentor junior doctors and ENT trainees.
In addition, I am also the lead for clinical governance in my role as an ENT Consultant in the NHS. I strive to adopt new and innovative, evidence-based practice to offer the best experience to my patients and the greatest opportunity to improve their health.
