MBChB, USMLE, MD, PhD, FRCSEd
I am a specialist Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon dedicated to helping patients return to their activities - from elite sport to everyday life. I am one of an exclusive group of UK orthopaedic surgeons to have completed an accredited Sports Knee Surgery fellowship in the USA, training at world-renowned institutions including Boston Medical Center, New England Baptist Hospital, Harvard University Health Services, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During this time, I served as team physician for elite division I basketball and ice hockey athletes at Boston University. Gaining this fellowship required passing the rigorous United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs), one of a select group of UK orthopaedic surgeons to achieve this.
Prior to my USA training, I undertook advanced fellowships in sports knee surgery and trauma at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, one of the UK’s leading tertiary centres for complex orthopaedic care. Today, my practice covers the full spectrum of knee conditions, from sports injuries such as ACL and meniscus tears to kneecap disorders, cartilage repair, knee preservation and realignment procedures, as well as partial and total knee replacement. Patients benefit from my unique blend of US and UK training, ensuring access to the most advanced surgical techniques delivered with a clear, honest, and personalised approach.
Alongside my clinical work, I am deeply committed to advancing knee surgery through research. I have obtained both a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) during my training and have published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, many with international recognition.
My specialist expertise spans:
• Female sports knee injuries, addressing the unique needs of female athletes
• Knee preservation techniques, osteotomy, cartilage restoration, meniscal transplantation
• Knee trauma and injury management
• Patellar (kneecap) stabilisation and realignment surgery
• Partial and total knee replacement (arthroplasty - manual and robotic)
• Sports knee surgery, single-ligament (ACL) and multi-ligament reconstruction
This breadth of expertise allows me to tailor treatment plans for every patient, whether the goal is returning to elite competition, staying active, or simply walking without pain.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Khalid Al-Hourani at Spire include:

I’m an ardent football fan and have recently discovered a new passion for padel – a sport which you can be awful at and still enjoy. Like many of my patients, I’ve had my share of sports injuries, so I know first-hand the frustration of being sidelined and the drive to get back to full fitness. I love exploring foods from different cultures, always keen to try something new wherever I travel. Family is at the heart of everything I do and they help ensure I remain in an active job in order to pay for their lifestyle. But they do remind me of the importance of staying active, healthy, and pain-free, values I bring into my work with patients.
