Mr Joseph Ring

Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon

MBChB, Bsc (hons) FRCS (Trauma and Orthopaedics), PGCertEd

"Working at Spire Hospital with the OrthTeam Manchester is incredibly rewarding. The facilities are excellent, and there’s a team-focused culture."

I am a fellowship-trained Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in foot and ankle surgery. I have more than seven years’ experience as a substantive NHS consultant and in the private sector. My NHS role is based at Wrightington Hospital, a world-renowned specialist tertiary orthopaedic centre.

I treat the full spectrum of elective and trauma-related foot and ankle conditions, including pain, deformity, arthritis, sports injuries, diabetic foot disease, and both soft tissue and bony injuries. I regularly manage common problems such as foot pain, deformity, bunions, neuromas, and lesser toe conditions, as well as complex hindfoot pathology.

I have experience with both established and innovative surgical techniques, including arthroplasty, arthroscopy, soft tissue reconstruction, cartilage repair and minimally invasive surgery. I provide an honest, personalised, and comprehensive evidence-based approach to care, with a strong focus on treating each patient as an individual and helping them return to their desired level of function.

I perform the full spectrum of foot and ankle procedures in both my NHS and private practice. This includes forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot reconstruction, ranging from simple toe conditions to complex revision hindfoot salvage fusions. I regularly undertake arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures, as well as a range of arthroplasty procedures for ankle and first metatarsophalangeal joint arthritis.
A key aspect of my practice is careful clinical assessment and shared decision-making, ensuring patients are fully counselled on all available treatment options. This includes non-surgical management, rehabilitation, therapeutic injections, and the role of biologic treatments where appropriate, before proceeding to surgery.
I also have extensive experience in the management of ankle cartilage defects and the full range of treatment options available. In addition, through my work at Wrightington, I have experience in complex revision and salvage procedures as part of my tertiary referral practice. This includes the use of patient-specific instrumentation and custom 3D-printed implants.

I am an elected member of the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS) Media and Communications Committee. In my NHS role, I am the Foot and Ankle Lead for the Diabetic Foot Service and the Lead for the internationally renowned Wrightington Foot and Ankle Fellowship.
