Mr Haitham Khalil

Consultant Oncoplastic & Reconstructive Surgeon

MSc, MRCS (Ed), MD, FRCS (Eng)

I attended Cairo University Medical School from 1995, spending nine years obtaining both a Masters (MSc) and Medical Doctorate (MD) degree. I spent over three years training for my fellowship at the internationally recognised unit for breast, plastic and reconstruction at King's College and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, including a year of microvascular surgery senior fellowship.

Shortly after, I started my oncoplastic career in the National Cancer Institute (NCI Cairo University) and the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of Cairo University Hospitals, before being appointed as a Consultant Reconstructive Surgeon at Heart of England NHS Foundation trust in 2009. It was here I introduced the microvascular surgery for breast reconstruction. I was also the first to set up and perform the first free microvascular surgical procedure for breast reconstruction in 2015 at Spire Parkway.

I am the Audit and Reconstructive surgery clinical service lead at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. The unit serves the breast unit which treats on average 650 breast cancers annually, with me performing an average of 300 breast oncoplastic related procedures annually. I am one of the very few reconstructive surgeons in the UK with a surgical oncological background which adds to the depth in consideration of the oncological aspects during reconstruction discussions to tailor them to the patient's needs.

In 2014 as part of my continuous educational responsibilities, I obtained an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer title at the University of Birmingham. I am a regular speaker in national and international meetings for breast, thoracic, abdomen and perineal reconstruction including American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) and the Mediterranean Society of pelvic floor disorder (MSPFD).

I regularly teach on several international instructional courses in Middle Eastern countries, especially microvascular breast reconstruction procedures. I am an author of 40 publications in high profile journals for Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.

In 2016, I was part of a team that introduced the first custom built 3D printed titanium implant for sternal reconstruction. This procedure was the first of its kind in the UK and the second in the world, so it’s going to be fascinating to see how this technology develops.

Around 10% of my work is directed to provision of chest wall reconstruction for thoracic sarcoma, isolated advanced breast cancer patients working closely with the thoracic surgeons as part of a multidisciplinary team. I also provide reconstructive cover for the perineum and lower abdominal defects reconstruction as part of multidisciplinary colorectal surgery team.
