Mr Fergus Noble

Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon

MBBS, BSc (Hons), PhD, FRCS (Gen. Surg.)

I have been a Consultant General and Upper gastrointestinal surgeon at University Hospital Southampton since 2018 and am an expert in benign and cancer surgery. I specialise in general surgery and treat patients with abdominal pain, hernia's and gallstones. My special interests include oesophageal and stomach cancers, Barrett’s oesophagus, Achalasia, hiatal and antireflux surgery, Robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and therapeutic endoscopy.

I undertook a prestigious international Fellowship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia to enhance my skills in minimally invasive cancer surgery and complex hiatal and bariatric work, before taking up my consultant post. I am part of the team carrying out minimally invasive surgery and has helped to establish the robotic oesophageal and gastric surgery at University Hospital Southampton NHS foundation Trust.

I have adopted and assessed new and innovative techniques which are suitable for the majority of patients. Minimally invasive surgery for gastrectomy and oesophagectomy. Linx procedure for reflux. Minimally invasive surgery for hiatal and groin (inguinal) surgery. I have now adopted Robotic surgery for all upper gastrointestinal procedures and have introduced Refluxstop to the south coast.

The upper gastrointestinal team and my outcomes are assessed internally and externally and can be reviewed via the National Oesophagogastric Audit and National Hiatal Registry.

I am Clinical service lead for Upper gastrointestinal Surgery at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. I act as an educational supervisor for trainees and has examined postgraduates undertaking a PhD or MD. He have authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed publications.
