Mr David Shewring

Consultant Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon

MB BCh, FRCSEd (Orth), Dip Hand Surg (Eur)

Specialises in

  • Hand and wrist injuries
  • Elbow conditions

During my practice I manage all hand and wrist problems, including complex problems, for all age groups. I also manage elbow problems. I have performed more than 1450 surgical operations during the last year and have an audited post-op infection rate of 0.26%, which is well below the national level.

I currently serve on Council of Federation European Societies for Surgery Hand as the sole UK member. I have contributed nationally and internationally to hand surgery, having served on all national committees of British Society for Surgery of the Hand including a term as Hon Secretary. I was also President Elect for 2018 in recognition of this. Moreover, I have made a national contribution to medical education and training.

After training in orthopaedic surgery in Southampton, Cambridge and Cardiff and having completed a year of advanced training in hand surgery in Oxford, I was appointed as a consultant hand surgeon in Cardiff in 1994. I set up from scratch, developed and lead a comprehensive service to treat hand problems in the Cardiff area - which has made huge improvement to patient care. I receive tertiary referrals from hospitals throughout Wales and am documented by 'Performance Management' as the most efficient and productive surgeon in any specialty in my Trust.

As an orthopaedic hand surgeon in the NHS I have four operating lists, three clinics and a preoperative assessment clinic weekly as well as a 1:3 on call commitment for hand injuries.

My managerial positions include Hon. Secretary for the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (2009–13). I am also Chairman of the Committee of Management, Journal of Hand Surgery (European Vol) (2015-2020). The Journal is the leading hand surgery journal in the world with the highest 'impact factor'.

I am Honorary Hand Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and I have treated numerous international and regional players over the last 20 years.

Research and publications

In the last 5 years I have worked on:

  • 8 podium presentations to BSSH scientific meetings/international meetings
  • 5 book chapters
  • 26 invited lectures to BSSH/BOA/FESSH/IFSSH/EFORT
  • Numerous publications in the Journal of Hand Surgery

Some other key achievements include:

  • Publishing the largest series in the world of phalangeal condylar fractures, redefining and modernising the treatment of these common injuries.
  • Published research on management of clenched fist “fight bite” injuries of the hand, describing a new “tendon splitting” surgical approach with a protocol for treatment to maximise outcome.
  • Published evidence that Cleland’s Ligaments in the finger, hitherto thought to be unaffected by Dupuytren’s Disease (DD), do become involved. This, with description of a new surgical approach has improved the surgical treatment of DD.
  • Member Editorial Board, Journal of Hand Surgery (European Vol) 2003-present: 147 papers reviewed.
  • Member BSSH "Research and Audit" committee- coordinates national research projects. Helped set up national multi centre trials comparing treatments for scaphoid fractures and mallet finger injuries.
  • Instrumental in setting up the post of Clinical Associate Professor in Hand Surgery, funded by BSSH and to be managed by Healing Foundation. The post is based in Nottingham and takes a leading role in setting up a Centre for Evidence Based Hand Surgery Research.
