After medical school at University College Dublin, I trained to FRCSI in Ireland. I then went on a research fellowship at Boston University. I returned as a lecturer in surgery in Sheffield and did my higher surgical training in Bristol and the South West. I completed training in coloproctology at St Mark's Hospital, London.
I have been a consultant General Surgeon in Portsmouth for five years, with a major interest in coloproctology. My ongoing clinical aim is to improve the process of care of patients with colorectal disease in order to improve clinical outcomes. My private practice is based at Spire Portsmouth Hospital, where I have a weekly clinic, operating sessions and colonoscopy facilities.
Benign and malignant colorectal disease account for the majority of my NHS and private practice.
I am the lead clinician for Colorectal Cancer Services for Portsmouth NHS Trust and Chairman of the Colorectal Site Specific Group of the Central South Coast Cancer Network. I am president of the Portsmouth and Isle of Wight Ileostomy Association. I am a trainer for courses in basic surgical skills, care of the critically ill surgical patient and M27 coloproctology course.
