Specialises in
Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant Knee and Trauma Surgeon at Liverpool University Hospitals, specialising in knee replacement surgery, soft‑tissue knee reconstruction, arthroscopic knee procedures and the management of patello‑femoral disorders. I also provide care for major and complex trauma, acute fractures and sports‑related knee injuries.
I am recognised as one of the leading trainers in the region and am regularly invited to teach at national and international meetings. My teaching focuses on arthroscopic knee surgery, ligament reconstruction, knee replacement techniques and trauma management, supporting both junior surgeons and consultant colleagues.
I graduated from the St Andrews and Manchester University medical programme and completed my early surgical training in Lancashire. I subsequently undertook Higher Surgical Training on the prestigious Oswestry Orthopaedic Training Programme, followed by specialist knee surgery fellowships at Aintree University Hospital, Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, and international centres in America, Germany and Northern Ireland.
Appointed as a Consultant in 2012, I returned to Liverpool to take up a substantive post. My elective practice focuses on knee replacement (primary and revision), sports knee injuries and strategies for arthritis prevention. Alongside planned surgery at Liverpool University Hospitals, I work as part of the Mersey and Cheshire Major Trauma Centre team, caring for some of the region’s most severely injured patients. I also offer NHS and private clinics at Spire Liverpool and the Sefton Suite, treating both elective and trauma‑related knee conditions. Since 2012, I have provided a regional knee reconstruction service for patients across Cheshire and Merseyside.
I prepare more than 300 medico‑legal reports each year, covering personal injury and clinical negligence cases. I am MedCo‑registered (DME6122), have undertaken extensive training in medico‑legal practice and maintain a strong interest in evidence‑based recovery outcomes following orthopaedic injury.
In addition to my clinical work, I am an examiner for the national exit exam in Trauma and Orthopaedics and Chair the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) for Trauma and Orthopaedics, which oversees the development and quality of postgraduate surgical training across the UK and Ireland. I have previously led the national selection process for entry into higher surgical training and formerly ran the Cheshire and Merseyside Trauma & Orthopaedic Training Programme, helping shape the next generation of consultants.
My lifelong involvement in sport — from Merseyside schools athletics to representing St Andrews University in rugby, and later competing in marathons and ultramarathons — underpins my passion for managing sports‑related knee injuries in athletes of all ages and abilities.
