MA MBBChir MD FRCS (Gen Surg)
I have been a consultant surgeon for 7 years. I work at Cambridge University Hospitals and Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital. I have expertise in robotic, laparoscopic and open colorectal and general surgery. I studied medicine at Cambridge University and did my higher surgical training in the region. I've conducted research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, gaining a Doctorate of Medicine. I also acquired specialised surgical experience in New Zealand.
I specialise in colorectal and general surgery. This includes treatment of abdominal wall hernia (groin / inguinal / femoral, para-umbilical, incisional), proctology (haemorrhoids, fistula, fissure, pilonidal sinus), and the investigation of bowel symptoms (colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy). I also work with gynaecology to treat complex and deep endometriosis of the bowel (robotic / laparoscopic).
To date my surgical logbook exceeds 4,500 surgical procedures in colorectal and general surgery.
In the NHS I am a trainer in surgery and endoscopy. I also instruct nationally and internationally on several surgical courses covering trauma care and decision-making in surgery. I have active research interests in robotic surgery, colorectal surgery, and human factors. I present at and am invited to speak at large international conferences and publish regularly in high impact peer-reviewed journals.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Atanu Pal at Spire include:
