After medical school in London, I trained in orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, completing my training as the Clinical Lecturer at UCL London. During my training, I spent a year at Harvard, working at MGH, where my activities were centred around primary and revision hip arthroplasty. I was appointed in Nottingham in 1999 and was part of the busy trauma group for many years, though more recently my practice has been based in elective surgery, with a specialist interest in primary and complex hip replacement, hip resurfacing and revision. Over 25 years as a Specialist Hip Surgeon, I have developed experience in a wide variety of reconstructive options.

I am the ‘Hip chair’ of the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network, providing a central hub to review and discuss complex surgery performed within a network of six hospitals, covering a population of around 4 million. EMSON has published and presented our activities and processes, receiving numerous visits as networks develop across the UK.

I travel widely to lecture and to demonstrate my experience and clinical activities in primary and revision hip surgery. I have been invited to speak regularly at the BHS and BOA meetings in the UK as well as at the annual conferences of EFORT and the EHS within Europe. I have also presented at the AAOS and at AAHKS in the US. Beyond that, I have been a guest lecturer in Australia, India, Canada, Singapore and Dubai. Within the UK, I established the popular Nottingham Hip Revision Meeting, attracting surgeons from around the globe and run annually since 2007.

I have published on numerous topics in primary, resurfacing and revision hip arthroplasty. Away from my clinical interests, I have published on Clinical Networks, the role and responsibilities of PHIN, and the effects of Covid on clinical activity.

I enjoy work in implant development. I have been involved in the development of the Continuum and Trilogy IT sockets, performing the first world-wide implantations of these now commonly used systems at NUH in 2008. I have ongoing development contracts in both primary and revision hip surgery. More recently, I have worked as one of four design surgeons with the development of a Ceramic resurfacing device (ReCerf). The clinical evaluation study, based in Nottingham, is now reaching its final stages.

I was President of the British Hip Society in 2018. I became a member of the International Hip Society in 2018. I am a member of the European Hip Society and was initially voted onto the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2019. I have recently been re-elected to serve a further term on the BOA Council.

Married to Claire, a GP, and with four tolerant and beautiful daughters aged between 18 and 25, I have little time to spare away from work. However, when quiet, I enjoy travelling, music, gardening, (watching) sport and planning future revisions.
