Mr Adam Sykes

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

MBBS, BSc, FRCS (Tr&Orth)

I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Royal Berkshire Hospital specialising exclusively in disorders of the foot and ankle for the last 3 years. I am committed to functional restoration, utilising a meticulous evidence-based approach to ensure the best possible long-term outcomes. I favour minimally invasive and keyhole techniques where appropriate to minimise soft tissue damage for an accelerated return to pain-free function.

I specialise in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery with a focus on forefoot corrective surgery (including bunions), sports injuries (including ankle sprains and instability), midfoot and hindfoot arthritis and tendon disorders.

I honed my knowledge and technical skills in these areas by completing two of the most prestigious fellowships in the UK at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham. These tertiary referral centres provided me with extensive experience in managing the full range of disorders, from the simplest toenail excision to the complex treatment of advanced ankle arthritis.

During my years in training and as a consultant I have developed techniques to surgically manage deformity and dysfunction through performing thousands of foot and ankle procedures. As each foot is unique, I have developed a bespoke approach to every patient in order to maximise their chances of returning to the activities they love.

I am proud to have pioneered the adoption of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) techniques at Royal Berkshire Hospital and have introduced them into my care at Spire Dunedin Hospital. As an adjunct and even replacement for more traditional techniques, this ensures that my patients are receiving the cutting-edge care to restore their function as quickly as possible.

I am committed to training the future generations of orthopaedic surgeons within the Oxford region and act as a supervisor to resident doctors of all levels. I am a firm believe that "to teach is to learn twice" as it ensures that I constantly re-evaluate the latest evidence and remain aligned with the latest international standards and peer-reviewed research.

Outside of my clinical and educational commitments, I am a devoted husband and father. As a former rugby player of many years, I now remain involved in the sport by coaching my son's rugby team - a role that keeps me active within the community.

I am a keen enthusiast of the outdoors pursuits and enjoy hiking, kayaking and mountain biking which help to remind me of the importance of healthy joints and how to keep active throughout life. To relax, I also enjoy the strategic challenging of gaming, spanning both modern computer titles and more traditional tabletop games. This blend of precision sports and analytical hobbies mirrors my approach to foot and ankle surgery.
