MBBS BSc PGCert(Res) FRCS(Paed) PhD
I qualified in medicine at Imperial College London in 2005 and trained as a paediatric surgeon in Leeds and Hull.
I currently work at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Leeds Children's Hospital as a consultant paediatric urologist and surgeon since 2020. I provide both planned and emergency care for children presenting to hospital with surgical conditions. The majority of my elective work is centred on paediatric urological conditions or general surgical conditions of childhood.
My interests include looking after children who have issues with the nerve supply to the bladder and bowel, issues with incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. My PhD focused on tissue engineering options for the bladder and disease mechanisms affecting the bladder lining. Resulting from this I have developed an interest in the host reactions to urinary tract infections and improving point of care diagnostic tests.
I have active research and advocacy roles in ensuring that the needs of children with urological conditions are addressed on a national level.
I am a strong advocate of "One Medicine" a concept which looks to further understanding and treatment of diseases that affect not only humans, but other species. I currently sit on the Scientific Committee of a "One Medicine" charity. The goal of this work is to ensure that advancements in human and veterinary medicine progress "hand-in-paw" so to speak to ensure equal access, without duplication of effort. An example is how we are tackling resistance to antibiotics, a significant issue affecting all living creatures and environments.
