I qualified in medicine in 1987 from Nottingham University Medical School, achieving an Honours degree. After house appointments in Nottingham, I completed my general professional training in Stoke-on-Trent, where I also began my neurology training. I first came to Edinburgh in 1992 and was appointed consultant in 1999, following a year in Australia in 1997 as advanced neurological trainee.
I am a full-time NHS consultant, undertaking general neurology clinics, as well as specialist clinics in movement disorders, 'First Seizures' and motor neurone disease. In addition to my NHS practice, I undertake private clinics at Spire Murrayfield and Shawfair Park Hospitals.
Academic: I was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (DM) in 1996 for research into stroke medicine and have published over 20 original papers in peer reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine (2007, Bell's palsy). I am a sub-editor of Practical Neurology. I lecture frequently to GPs, hospital physicians and patient organisations. I am also a member of several committees-
I am a general neurologist, and comfortable seeing patients with any neurological symptoms. I have particular interests in Headache (including migraine and cluster syndromes), Movement disorders (including Parkinson's Disease and ataxia), Epilepsy (including unexplained blackouts and funny turns), Motor neurone disease and Myasthenia Gravis.
