I graduated from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, in 1988. I did my General Medical training in London and Oxford, including a 2-year General Medical rotation at St Thomas' Hospital, working under Sir Professor Richard Thompson (ex Physician to the Queen and ex President of the Royal College of Physicians). I then embarked on a career in Cardiology, completing my General Cardiology training in Birmingham, Oxford and Wales. I then subspecialised in coronary intervention, which included a 2.5 year interventional fellowship at the prestigious Cardiovascular Research Foundation, New York, and the New York University Medical Centre, New York, USA.
My specialist interests include complex coronary intervention, the management of acute and stable coronary artery disease and the management of heart failure. I am one of the highest volume coronary intervention operators in the UK. I am currently the lead for the acute chest pain service at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. I hold six Clinical Excellence Awards.
I am active in research and have published widely in the fields of vascular biology, coronary intervention, heart failure and diabetic cardiomyopathy, the latter being the subject of my BHF Junior Research Fellowship MD with Prof Ajay Shah. I am a regular reviewer for several international Cardiology journals, and am Editor-in-Chief of Heart International, an international, peer-reviewed, general Cardiology journal. I am Co-director of the global C3 conference (Complex Cardiovascular Catheter Therapeutics), which is held annually in Orlando, USA.

I try and strike a balance between family and work, which can prove challenging at times. The whole family loves medicine and three of my children are medics, with a fourth hoping to follow suit. I am a keen footballer, although my ageing knees sometimes fail me and limit my contribution to the team effort! When I have spare time, I like to do landscape oil painting, but have not succeeded in selling any of my paintings as yet!
