MyKnee personalised knee replacement

Personalised knee replacements tailored for each patient starting from an image of their own knee

MyKnee fits the shape of the arthritic knee accurately, allowing precise preparation of the bone for implanting the prosthesis.

Why you might need it

MyKnee replacement combines personalised technology to produce a new knee replacement system tailored for each patient starting from an image of their own knee. A scan is used to produce bespoke instruments to implant the knee replacement so the knee can be placed with great accuracy. MyKnee fits the shape of the arthritic knee accurately, allowing precise preparation of the bone for implanting the prosthesis.

MyKnee is a new medical product which can improve the quality of your life in two ways; the individualised design allows the patient fast rehabilitation and helps the knee function more like a normal knee. The personalised fit also allows ligaments to be preserved and balanced. The surgery for the new knee can be less invasive than traditional surgery as there is no intramedullary canal violation and there may be a reduction in the risk of embolism. Less traumatic surgery can also reduce post-operative pain and bruising.

The combination of tailor-made instruments with less invasive surgery means patients can usually to walk within a few hours of surgery and go home early to complete their recovery.

MyKnee technology potentially makes the intervention of total knee replacement more bespoke and less traumatic. It is demonstrated that an accurate positioning of the prosthesis leads to an increased survival of the implant.

The procedure

MyKnee is a patient-specific cutting block that reproduces a 3D preoperative knee. CT and MRI images of the patients knee, based on the patients knee allows the surgeon to carry out a knee replacement in a brand new, patient focused way. The 3D model is sent digitally to the MyKnee laboratory where to personalised knee instruments are made. The surgeon is able to make changes to / and accept the surgical planning for each patient before manufacturing takes place.

Specific made cutting blocks are the matched to the patients individual anatomy reproducing the 3D pre-operative planning. Once the knee guide tools are manufactured, they are sent to the patients hospital within three weeks for surgery to take place.
