Regulator highlights ‘Outstanding’ caring services at Solihull hospital

83% of all Spire’s 39 UK hospitals are rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’

West Midlands-based Spire Parkway Hospital has been upgraded to a ‘Good’ rating, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out a comprehensive examination into services offered at the 43-bed facility in September of this year, including an unannounced visit. They concluded that the facility should be classified as an overall rating of ‘Good’, up from the ‘Requires Improvement’ grading it received when the CQC previously carried out a full inspection in July 2015.

The regulatory body rated the hospital across five key areas examining whether services were safe, effective, caring, responsive to people's needs, and well-led. The hospital received an ‘Outstanding’ rating for being caring, and ‘Good’ ratings for all other areas.

Spire Parkway Hospital provides medical and surgical care to the residents of Solihull, Birmingham, Warwickshire and further afield, with more than 600 GP surgeries referring patients to the hospital in a range of specialities including: orthopaedics, general surgery, ear, nose and throat (ENT), ophthalmology, urology, and gynaecology.

Facilities at the hospital include five operating theatres, including an endoscopy suite, an extended recovery unit, two in-patient wards, a day care unit and a specialist cancer centre.

The inspection report highlighted that staff treated patients with compassion and kindness, respected their privacy and dignity, taking into account their individual needs, as well as helping them understand their conditions. They also provided emotional support to patients, families and carers. Staff were also praised for planning care to meet the needs of local people.

Several examples of the hospital’s practice were highlighted as being ‘Outstanding’. This included a comprehensive audit and risk management structure. This ensured the service had a transparent approach to the management of risk and the assurance of safety. The oncology service was also singled out for excellent care and service.

Silvie Adams, Hospital Director at Spire Parkway Hospital, said: “Moving up to a ‘Good’ rating reflects an enormous amount of hard work and the delivery of consistently high standards of care by all our staff at Parkway. We are very proud of this achievement and are now determined to build on our success and further develop our services.”
