Professional profile

I have been a consultant gynaecologist with a specialist practice in urogynaecology and pelvic floor disorders (incontinence and prolapse treatments) for the last 17 years. I specialise in the treatment of vaginal and uterine prolapse and the treatments of urinary incontinence in women. I perform investigations on the bladder such as urodynamic testing. I also treat patients with period problems (heavy and/or painful). I perform 250 prolapse operations and around 150 incontinence procedures each year and am one of the busiest in the UK. I audit all outcomes and am able to give specific risks and benefits of all surgical procedures and conservative treatments.

I have performed over 2,500 TVT/ mid urethral sling procedures over the last 16 years. I have performed over 3,000 prolapse procedures including more than 1,000 abdominal and vaginal hysterectomies. In addition I have performed more than 1,000 laparoscopies (inspection of the pelvic organs and a similar number of inspections of the womb cavity - hysteroscopies.

I am Vice Chairman of the British society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) and have direct management of the research and IT committees. Externally I am responsible for our relationship with HQIP and the consultant outcome program. I am responsible for certain aspects of the BSUG database development and strategy. I sit on the RCOG Pelvic Floor clinical studies group and aim to encourage research in our speciality.

In addition to my clinical work I am also a Honorary Professor – University of Kent, School of Pharmacy My work involves identifying if there may be an infective cause to the overactive bladder syndrome. We are also working on drug delivery systems and assessing the role of certain biomarkers in the cause and prognosis of this condition. I am a Visiting Professor – University of Greenwich, School of Science. This work involves looking at conservative treatments for stress incontinence. I have research fellows that I supervise and PhD students working for me. We regularly present our work at National and International meetings. I have published widely and have over 70 peer reviewed publications in journals as well as book chapters. I regularly lecture on my work to a variety of different audiences.

I'm interested in new surgical techniques for the treatment of prolapse, and surgical and conservative treatments of incontinence.

I have an active research program identifying different causes of the overactive bladder and benefits of different surgical treatments.
