As a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh for 24 years, I provided a specialist urology service with subspecialist interests in all forms of prostate diseases and kidney surgery. I was Lead Clinician for Urology from 2007-2011 and was elected as Secretary, then Chairman, of the British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Oncology Executive Committee in serving from 2011-2017. I have also Chaired the Surgical Specialty Board for Urology at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and has been Trustee, Treasurer and is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Journal of Urology International Charity, which supports education in urology across the world with proceeds from the publication of the BJUI Journals and BJUI Knowledge online educational platform.
Having undertaken fellowship training in minimal access surgery (MAS) techniques at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio and the University Hospital, Leipzig, I led the development of the laparoscopic and then robotic surgery programmes in Urology at local and national levels.
I have the largest experience of minimal access surgical procedures in Scotland and I am amongst the most experienced laparoscopic/robotic urological surgeons in the UK. I have performed over 500 laparoscopic nephrectomies and almost 3000 laparoscopic/robot assisted prostatectomies – the results of which are subject to rigorous audit, as part of local and national audit programmes, which I was involved in establishing. I have experience of the extraperitoneal approach to radical prostatectomy, Retzius-sparing and salvage radical prostatectomy as well as robot assisted simple prostatectomy and bladder diverticulectomy. As a result of his extensive experience, accrued over 20 years, I was named as one of the top ten prostate cancer surgeons by the Daily Mail and I undertake surgery in more challenging cases where other surgeons may have demurred.
In addition to offering both Bipolar TURP and Green Light Laser ablation surgery for benign prostate enlargement, I recently led the introduction of robot-assisted Aquablation of the prostate in Scotland and provides this service as Spire Edinburgh Hospitals.
I have published many peer-reviewed papers and is actively involved in research into prostate disease with a collaborative project between Edinburgh and Heriot Watt Universities that has funded by grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, The Urology Foundation. The resulting spinout company IntelliPalp Dx has received support from Scottish Enterprise and ScottishEDGE.
A former Programme Director for the East of Scotland Training Programme in Urology (2004-2007) I remain very active in skills training for minimal access surgery, I have organized and participated in courses run for the British Association of Urological Surgeons and have helped several other surgeons implement their own laparoscopic and robotic surgery programmes.
In 2006 I initiated and helped establish Prostate Scotland, a charity that aims to raise awareness and educate Scottish men about the prostate and the diseases that affect it. Sir Tom Farmer was Patron of the charity that goes from strength to strength, providing valuable support and information to men affected by prostate disease and their families.
As a consequence of a successful research collaboration with Professor Bob Reuben spanning more than two decades, I hold Honorary Professor titles in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Heriot Watt University and The University of Edinburgh.

In 2006 I helped establish Prostate Scotland with my wife and a group of like-minded individuals. The charity aims to raise awareness and educate Scottish men about the prostate and the diseases that affect it. Following significant growth, the charity was appointed its first director in 2008. 2009 marked the launch of Prostate Scotland's website and information campaign.
Whilst work commitments currently demand a lot of time, I enjoy family life with my wife Alison and our son and daughter. When time permits I play golf, work in the garden and enjoy a bit of shooting.
