Mrs Debbie Larson

Specialist Hand Therapist and Mindfulness Teacher

BScOT, MSc Hand Therapy

"The Physiotherapy department at Spire Norwich Hospital has been incredibly supportive in developing a mindfulness service to support people with chronic health conditions."

I have been a Hand Therapist for 15 years and am an expert in treating people who have experienced an injury, have had an operation or have developed a painful condition in the hand or wrist. I can provide all the splinting, scar management and exercise guidance needed for a hand and wrist condition.

I specialise in carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, De Quervain disease, arthritic conditions of the hand and wrist, traumatic injuries of the hand and wrist, hand therapy, work-related upper limb disorders and complex regional pain syndrome.

I am an expert in the post-operative management of Dupuytren's contracture release. As part of a research team who wrote a seminal paper in this field, I have presented the findings all over the world and have written a textbook chapter on post-operative care following Duputyren's surgery.

I also have a keen interest in supporting people who are struggling to cope with a physical problem and are experiencing low mood, anxiety, chronic pain and/or fatigue. I trained to become a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) teacher in 2016. In addition to my role as a hand therapist, I teach people to use mindfulness to improve their ability to cope with any physical health condition.

For MBCT, I specialise in chronic musculoskeletal pain (eg back pain and arthritic conditions), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and other chronically painful conditions.

In addition to working at Spire, I run Simply Mindfulness Norwich. Simply Mindfulness provides mindfulness courses and workshops to the general public, workplaces and schools.

Night-time splinting after fasciectomy or dermofasciectomy for Dupuytren’s contracture: a pragmatic, multi-centre, randomized controlled trial

I enjoy spending time with my husband and two young children in the outdoors, walking or canoeing in the beautiful Norfolk Broads. I like to stay active by running, rowing and growing vegetables.
