I  am a Professor of Rhinology and Consultant ENT Surgeon with a specialist interest in Rhinology, Facial Plastics and Allergy. I am trained as a general adult and paediatric ENT Surgeon. I have developed a sub-specialist practice in complex Rhinology and Allergy, in particular medical and surgical management of allergic (hayfever) and non-allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, rhinosinusitis, complex sinus disease, facial pain, watery eyes (epiphora), snoring, and obstructive sleep apnoea.

I perform minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery and nasal plastic surgery (nose jobs). I also deal with general ear (otology) including ear wax removal, and throat (laryngeal) conditions including voice problems. I perform general ENT operations like tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy and grommet insertion.

I also run specialist clinics for nose and sinus allergy and snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. The latter is the only such clinic in the region offering a comprehensive service for the assessment and management of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, in conjunction with an experienced sleep physiologist and ability to arrange private home sleep studies.

I graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 1994. I undertook my higher specialist surgical training in ENT in the West Midlands and Wessex deaneries. During my training, The Royal College of Surgeons of England funded me for three years (2001-2004) to carry out postgraduate basic science research into the mechanisms of inflammation in allergic rhinitis. This research was based in the Infection, Inflammation and Immunity Division of the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton. This work has culminated in a PhD which was awarded in 2005. Subsequently, I was also awarded a Hunterian Professorship of Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006, the first such award of its kind to a UK Rhinologist.

During my final year of clinical training (2008), I undertook a sub-specialist overseas fellowship in Rhinology & Anterior Skull Base Surgery under the tutelage of Professor Wytske Fokkens at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. In 2008, I was awarded one of the prestigious Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Clinical Senior Lectureships. I started my appointment as Senior Lecturer in Rhinology and Honorary Consultant ENT Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton in 2009. I now hold the position of Inaugural Chair of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Southampton, and Honorary Professor of Rhinology at University Hospital Southampton.

I am the Clinical Lecture Series Module lead for Year 3 medical students, and teach on the Allergic Airways Disease Module of the Allergy MSc Course at the University of Southampton (www.som.southampton.ac.uk/allergy). I am also a faculty member on the internationally renowned Wessex Advanced Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Course held annually in Southampton (www.wessexent.co.uk).

Additional information

I am an academic surgeon with a major interest in academia, research and teaching. I am currently Head of the Southampton Upper Airway Research Group which I established in 2009. The Group’s current research program is broadly focused in 3 areas:

  1. Elucidation of mechanisms of disease resistance in Staphylococcus aureus-mediated chronic rhinosinusitis, in particular the role of intracellular bacterial localisation and virulence factors in mediating disease chronicity and resistance to antibiotics. The Group is also currently testing potential new antimicrobial therapies such as Simvastatin for repurposing as topical anti-S. aureus treatments in resistant chronic rhinosinusitis disease.
  2. Use of the nose to develop novel biomarkers to enable early detection and monitoring of dementia (collaboration with the Carare Research Group).
  3. Characterisation of the sinonasal microbiome and its diversity in adult Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, and its impact on upper airway disease severity (collaboration with the PCD Group).

Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Professor of Rhinology & Consultant ENT Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton.

My interests outside work are mainly family-oriented centred around my 4 children and Portuguese water dog Ozzy. I also enjoy tennis, fast cars and wildlife programmes.
