Mr Philip James

Consultant Urologist

BMedSci, BMBS, FRCS(Urol)

I have been a Consultant Urologist for 8 years, taking up my first NHS consultant post at Ashford and St Peter’s in October 2017. I have since relocated to Yorkshire, commencing my new role at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield in July 2025.

I specialise in all aspects of core urology, including endourological procedures of the upper and lower urinary tract. My scope extends to both benign and malignant conditions, as well as all aspects of male and female urological problems. I have a keen interest in improving the diagnostic pathways of patients with suspected prostate malignancy, helping to introduce template-guided prostate biopsy services at both St Peter’s and Pinderfields hospitals.

In addition, I have been integral to the development of day case treatments for bladder cancer, and bladder outflow obstruction, through my interest in transurethral laser ablation (TULA) and greenlight laser photovaporisation techniques.

In addition to my clinical work, I maintain a firm commitment to medical and urological training in Kent, Surrey and Sussex, Yorkshire, and nationally. I was the Director of Medical Education at Ashford and St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust and regularly host training sessions for those in higher specialty training.

Furthermore, I was a founding member of the National Catheter Education Programme, (a Health Education England funded initiative that is working to improve the care of patients with indwelling, urethral, and suprapubic catheters).

In my free time, I enjoy nothing more than going to a big event with my wife, cheering on the  Harlequins and Brentford. I enjoy playing golf and tennis at my local clubs. We welcomed a baby boy in 2023, a baby girl in 2025 and we are enjoying the mix of chaos and the joy that life with a baby brings.
