Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Hugh Apthorp at Spire include:
Mr Apthorp trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and then worked at St Bartholomew's and Addenbrooke's Hospitals in Cambridge.
His orthopaedic training was at St Thomas' Hospital, London. I also spent a year in Perth, Western Australia, specialising in revision of joint replacements.
Mr Apthorp's main interests lie in joint replacement performing around 60 minimally invasive hip replacements per year and treating young adults with hip pain. Mr Apthorp has have personally carried out over 6,500 total hip replacements, the largest number published on the National Joint Registry.
Mr Apthorp assist with the training of young surgeons, as well as teaching experiences established surgeons new techniques. He also trains hospital teams to learn the enhanced recovery philosophies.
In 2004, Mr Apthorp pioneered Rapid Recovery in the UK, setting up the first Rapid Recovery Programme for joint replacements. Department of Health figures have shown that using my Rapid Recovery Programme has allowed patients to enjoy the shortest length of stay for hip replacement in England with extremely low complication rates. Such was the success of surgery and the Enhanced Recovery Programme that the following milestones were reached: the UK’s first day case hip replacement and the first patient in the world with bilateral hip replacements to return home the day following surgery.
Mr Apthorp developed a programme to enhance patient recovery following hip replacement and am now working with the Strategic Health Authority to develop the programme in other UK hospitals.
