Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Allan Stirrat at Spire include:
After initial experience in general and vascular surgery at Liverpool I switched to orthopaedic surgery in 1985 with basic training in hand surgery at Northwick Park, London. I was a senior resident on the Harvard Orthopaedic programme in 1986/87. Higher training then followed at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital with special interest in peripheral nerve injury. I became consultant at Sunderland Royal Hospital in 1991 where I was Clinical Director in Trauma and Orthopaedics from 1997 for three years.
I specialise in orthopaedic surgery of the upper limb including shoulder and hand surgery.
I have been responsible for organising postgraduate training in surgery of the shoulder and elbow for the Northern Region. I was on the Medical Advisory Committee at Spire Washington Hospital from 1994 to 1997. I am an Executive Director of Matrix Health Services UK, a company based in the Northeast of England which delivers healthcare in partnership with NHS organisations.

I am enthusiastic about my practice which is now focused on the upper limb. I was born and educated in Scotland and moved south after graduation. In recent years I have lived much of the time in Edinburgh although I continue to practice in the Northeast of England, based in Sunderland and Newcastle. My experiences in management as a NHS clinical director and as executive director of a private healthcare company have given me considerable insight into the delicate balance between patient expectations, the cost of healthcare and the responsibilities of the medical profession. I enjoy sport which stimulates my interest in the management of sports injuries.Back to top
