Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Alan Dickson at Spire include:
I qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 1977 and then undertook my basic surgical training in Edinburgh, achieving an FRCS in 1982. Thereafter, I moved to work as a research fellow in Glasgow for one year before moving back to Edinburgh to embark on paediatric surgical training for five years. I was initially appointed as registrar then promoted to senior registrar in 1984, moving to the University of Cape Town Children's Hospital for one year in 1986. I received a strong grounding in the breadth of paediatric surgery and became proficient in all aspects of the specialty including neonates, gastroenterology, oncology and urology. I was appointed in 1988 as a consultant paediatric surgeon with a special interest in urology in Manchester. There I practised the whole spectrum of paediatric surgery for over ten years and then eventually focussed on paediatric urology in 1999. I am the senior clinician leading the Manchester based national service for bladder exstrophy.
My main clinical interest is in the area of the lower urinary tract including, bladder exstrophy, hypospadias, bladder reconstruction, neuropathic bladder and genital reconstruction.
My extensive clinical experience has enabled me to be actively involved in training, including examination boards, national training committees, and national bodies. I have regularly lectured in my areas of interest both at home and overseas. In addition, I provide clinical opinion to overseas colleagues and has operated regularly abroad during the past eight years. I have over 40 peer reviewed papers and over 40 congress presentations.
