I am a member of The Liverpool Eye Clinic based at Spire Liverpool. I am a specialist in treating people with retinal conditions, including AMD, Diabetic Eye Disease and those requiring surgery, such as retina detachment. My NHS practice is in the position of Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where I am the Audit and Undergraduate Education Lead.

I also provide a general ophthalmology service, including cataract surgery. I qualified from Coimbra University Medical School, Portugal, where I commenced my ophthalmology training before moving to the UK. I completed my ophthalmic surgical training at Glasgow University Hospital followed by three years of specialist vitreoretinal surgical fellowship training in Australia, St Paul’s Eye Unit, Liverpool and Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, London.

In addition to my clinical experience, I completed research in the cytogenetics of choroidal melanomas and my research culminated in the award of an MD from the University of Glasgow in 2007. I also did a fellowship in ocular oncology at St Paul’s Eye Unit. I was appointed as a consultant at Sunderland Eye Infirmary in 2012 but moved back to St Paul’s as a consultant in July 2018.

I have extensive experience in the assessment of retinal conditions requiring surgery such as retina detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes. I also specialise in small – incision cataract surgery and diabetic eye disease – assessments, laser treatment and surgery as well as AMD and injectable medicines such as Lucentis and Eylea.

I continue research on retina diseases and am also involved in national clinical trials.
