Professional profile

Dr Richard Armstrong is a Consultant Neurologist practicing at the Spire Dunedin Hospital, The Royal Berkshire Hospital and Oxford University Hospitals. He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Neurology at Oxford University.

He diagnoses and treats patients with all neurological problems, having particular expertise in migraine and headache disorders, epilepsy and neurogenetics.

Dr Armstrong graduated from Cambridge University in pre-clinical medical sciences and neuroscience and went onto complete a PhD researching treatments for Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease, resulting in over a dozen publications. He has now authored over forty publications. He completed his medical training in Oxford where he graduated top of the year. He undertook general professional training in London and Australia and completed neurology training while the university clinical lecturer in neurology at Oxford University, with periods at the National Hospital for Neurology at Queen Square.

Dr Armstrong has been a Consultant Neurologist in Reading and Oxford since 2011. As well as managing patients with all general neurological problems he leads the epilepsy service in Reading and treats many patients with headache disorders including with nerve blocks and botulinum toxin. Dr Armstrong runs the regional Huntington’s disease service in the Thames Valley and is active in the European Huntington’s Disease Network.

He maintains active research interests and collaborations in the Universities of Oxford and Reading and participates in International clinical trials as a principle investigator. He also maintains an interest in medical education and ran and updated the undergraduate neurology course at Oxford University.

Dr Armstrong sees patients with all general neurological problems and has special interest in epilepsy, headache and cognitive problems.
