Dr Andrew Godkin
Consultant Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and General Physician
MA, MBBChir, MD, FRCP
I was appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist in 2001 to the University Hospital of Wales, so I have > 10 years experience at consultant level. After completing my medical training from Cambridge University and various London teaching hospitals, I went to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford in the 1990s to work for Prof Derek Jewell, one of the world’s leading luminal gastroenterologist. I returned to London to Imperial College and spent my final three years on the liver unit at St Mary’s with Prof Howard Thomas, a hepatologists with a keen interest in viral hepatitis. Hence my training prior to arriving in Cardiff was in both gastroenterology and hepatology. Since working in Cardiff, I have developed a liver service to complement the gastroenterology, and have maintained and expanded a broad range of medical and endoscopic skills. Complementing my clinical practise, I have developed an active research group in the School of Medicine (see below), focusing largely on colorectal cancer.
I have broad experience and expertise in luminal gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopy (ERCP, colonoscopy, OGD) and am competent in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of diseases. I have a specialist interest in complex liver disease including the treatment of viral hepatitis and portal hypertension.
I have performed over 5 000 endoscopies, including OGD, colonoscopy and ERCP. I have performed approximately 1000 liver biopsies.
I have successfully supervised 4 PhD student, 1 MD student, 2 post-docs, 1 MSc Student, 4 summer students and currently have 3 PhD students. I am also an Invited speaker to other leading academic Institutions e.g. Imperial College, Oxford University; and to international meetings e.g.British Society for Immunology(BSI); International cancer vaccines meetings. Additionally, I am the Trust Research and Development (R&D) lead for medicine (since 2006). This involves reviewing and vetting grants from the Cardiff and Vale UHB. I was elected in 2015 Programmes Committee for British Society of Immunology for 3 year term term. I will now have direct influence on both content and selected speakers for the annual meetings.
I review grants continually for the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, and Cancer Research UK. As part of the public engagement of science I made BBC television and radio shows promoting our work and public awareness of disease. I lectured in 2011 for Cardiff University Science in Health Public Lecture "Self Inflicted Liver Disease" and taught in local primary school Pwll Coch on “Human Bodies and Bones”; so making my target audience from 6 to 106 years old!
