Is it time to act on your back pain?

22 May 2019

If pain in your back is affecting your daily life and you’re worried about local waiting times, opting to go private could be the right choice for you.

People who have experienced back pain know just how negatively it can impact their lives. From sleeping to getting out of the car, back pain can be constant and can greatly impact your quality of life.

Luckily most of us only encounter back pain through muscular injury, however we are all at risk, not just those involved in heavy lifting or sports. We can injure our backs easily by simply twisting or sitting incorrectly at our desks.

One of the more common back problems are slipped discs. Slipped discs occur when the ‘gel’ inside a disc leaks and bulges out of the disc, often putting pressure on a nerve. Pain can be felt around the disc area and in other areas controlled by the nerve where the disc is pressing. Slipped discs often occur in the lower back and as well as pain, can cause weakness, pins and needles or tingling sensations.

Knowing when to act with back pain can be vital in getting you back to some normality. Your first point of call is your GP who can assess and refer you for scans and treatment if necessary.

Seeing a specialist consultant can put your mind at rest and ensure you get the right treatment when you need it. Surgery is an option when other treatments have not worked, or if your symptoms are getting worse.

Don’t delay getting help, it is recommend that you speak to your GP if pain persists for more than 14 days, or if you experience a combination of symptoms such as weakness, pins and needles or sharp pains.
