Keyhole surgery allows your doctor to check and treat knee problems.
At Spire Cheshire Hospital, we use many of the latest techniques and innovations for investigating and treating knee pain and injuries. This includes anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and other ligament injuries, cartilage damage, meniscal (meniscus) tear and osteoarthritis.
Knee arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery, which uses an arthroscope (a thin, flexible, telescopic instrument) to investigate or treat knee problems.

Please note that for some procedures the actual price you are quoted may vary significantly and can increase depending on your choice of Consultant (who is an independent practitioner and not an employee of Spire). At Spire Cheshire Hospital, we have wide experience of performing knee arthroscopy in our high-quality facilities. The procedures offered to you will depend on your symptoms or condition.
Some of our consultants perform techniques called autologous chondrocyte implantation and microfracture.
Autologous chondrocyte implantation is used to treat painful cartilage defects in your knee. Healthy cartilage cells are taken from another part of your body and injected into the damaged area of your cartilage.
Microfracture is where your consultant makes small holes in your bones to stimulate cartilage growth. This is a more invasive procedure and may require a longer hospital stay. If your consultant thinks you'd benefit from this procedure, they'll be able to tell you more about what's involved and the cost.
We also have two laminar flow operating theatres which regulate air flow to minimise the risk of infection.

Your consultations
All your consultations will take place in one of our 15 accessible private rooms, so don’t worry if you have difficulty walking.
During your consultations, we'll:
Once you and your consultant have agreed to go ahead with your knee arthroscopy, your consultant and your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan.
Here’s what will happen on the day of your knee arthroscopy:
If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our reception area while you have your operation.
Usually, you can go home on the same day after a knee arthroscopy. Your consultant will discuss how the investigation or treatment went and whether they recommend further surgery.
You may feel some pain once the anaesthetic wears off, but don’t worry, your healthcare team will give you painkillers to help with this. How long any pain lasts and your recovery time will depend on what your consultant needed to do during your procedure. If you’ve had any treatment, it may take longer than if you just had an investigation.
Although everybody’s different and you should always follow your consultant’s advice, here’s a typical recovery timeline for knee arthroscopy:
Leave hospital
Return to work, depending on your job
May be able to drive
Return to heavy work and sports
