Knee replacement at Spire Bushey Hospital

A knee replacement is a procedure to remove your damaged knee joint and replace it with an artificial one (a prosthesis or implant). 

When you come to us you’ll have an initial consultation with your chosen specialist to discuss your medical history and treatment path. This may be followed with diagnostic tests, scans, or investigations to help your consultant advise on how best to proceed. 

The consultant will assess your suitability for the robotic treatment and will explain how it works in detail, including the benefits and risks versus a standard knee replacement.

During a traditional knee replacement, the damaged or worn parts of the thigh and shin bones, which form the knee joint, are replaced with metal and plastic parts that glide over each other smoothly when you move or bend your knee.

A knee replacement is normally performed under general anaesthetic and takes between one and two hours in theatre.

You can usually expect to stay in hospital for 2-4 days.

With the NAVIO™ surgical system, a probe feeds a 3D ‘roadmap’ of the knee into a computer, providing the surgeon with all the information needed to create a specific surgical plan for each individual patient. This allows surgeons to minimise the amount of bone removed from the damaged knee before positioning the implant in exactly the right place to achieve optimum joint stability.

Similar to a traditional knee replacement, it is likely you will need to stay in hospital for 2-4 days. However the NAVIO™ system is designed to reduce the time it takes to recover following your knee replacement.

After your knee replacement surgery a member of our highly specialist physiotherapy team will be on hand to get you back on your feet and will continue to work with you during your stay.

Our hydrotherapy pool supports your body weight and speeds up your rehabilitation by lessening the load (gravity) on your muscles and joints, helping to improve your range of movement, muscle strength and reducing swelling.

Our patients benefit from a tailored physiotherapy programme and our team will ensure you are confident moving about and going up and down stairs before you go home.

You will be given some exercises to do at home to help your recovery as well as pain relief and all the information you need about getting back to normal.
