Dr Ashan Gunarathne

Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Honorary Assistant Professor of Cardiology

Specialises in

Currently I work as a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital Nottingham NHS Trust. My current responsibilities in addition to providing PCI (angiography and stenting) service are to provide in-patient cardiology care, outpatient cardiology service (OP), contribution to the 24/7 primary PCI service and take part in the general cardiology on-call rota.

I have performed more than 1,000 interventional procedures over the last seven years and recently started a new service at University Hospital Nottingham NHS trust to treat patients with Atrial Fibrillation who cannot take anticoagulation - Left Atrial Appendage occlusion (LAAO).

I completed my cardiology and PCI subspecialty training in the East Midlands Deanery, UK. I obtained skills, attributes and experience in performing complex coronary interventions during my intervention and structural fellowship. In addition I have completed two years of academic research leading to many first author publications and Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) from the University of Birmingham.

I was affiliated to the department of clinical sciences at University of Birmingham as an Honorary Senior Lecturer and have continued to conduct research on aortic valve disease including TAVI procedures (Trans Aortic Valve Implantations) and published in high impact factor journals.
