Mr Hanif's basic undergraduate degree was gained at Dundee Medical School, Scotland. His training in ENT surgery was in London, Cardiff and Swansea. During his specialist training he spent a year in full time research at Cardiff University and Medical School looking at nasal disease and this research led to the award of Master of Philosophy in Rhinology. He also worked in Australia as a Senior Fellow in Otology for a year where he performed numerous major ear operations.
As well as general ENT surgery his main interests include nasal airway, sinus disease and facial pain, endoscopic sinus surgery, chronic middle ear disease and ear infections, dizziness/vertigo and correction of bat ears (pinnaplasty). As a result of previous research on the complications of ear piercing, he has been interviewed on BBC Breakfast News and quoted in national and international media. His research interests have led to several publications in medical journals.
He also has a sub-specialty interest in the treatment of snoring and sleep apnoea. He runs a specialist snoring and sleep apnoea clinic. He is a member of the International Surgical Sleep Society (surgicalsleep.org).
Mr Hanif is very interested in training hospital doctors, nurses and GPs and he has established an annual Ear Care Course held at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. This is a successful and well attended course.

Mr Hanif is married with a young family. He and his wife share a passion for travel and have travelled extensively around the world. He is also passionate about reading literature. In the past he has held a full private pilot's licence, which has lapsed, but intends to start flying again soon. To keep healthy he plays squash and swims regularly.
