Paying for yourself

Paying for your own treatment is a quick and easy way to get immediate access to the healthcare you need. Contact our friendly advisors for more information.

Step by step

We believe in making things easy and straight forward, so we've outlined the steps in booking and paying for your treatment below.

Book an appointment

Accessing our hospital is quick and easy.  Some patients are referred to us from their GP, but many consultants are happy to see patients without a GP referral so you can contact us directly and we can book an appointment for you.  Our advisors are here to help you find the best consultant for you and answer any questions you might have.

When you come to us you’ll have an initial consultation with your chosen specialist to discuss your condition and treatment path.

This may be followed with any tests, scans, or investigations you may need to help us advise how best to proceed. Please note that the initial consultations and any initial tests, scans and investigations will be charged separately.

Once the consultant has discussed the treatment you require, you will be given a fixed price*, which will cover all of your costs relating to your treatment from this point on.

*Please read Spire’s terms and conditions for full details of what’s included and excluded in your fixed price treatment.

A single, fixed price*

We believe in making things simple and straightforward.

That’s why once your consultant has discussed the treatment you need, we offer you a single, fixed price* for your treatment so there are no surprises. That way you can focus on your recovery and rest assured you pay the price you’re given, with no hidden charges.

This price covers all costs relating to your care from that point on and is made up of your surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist fees, hospital fees such as nursing, accommodation, food, etc. and the price of any necessary prosthesis from our standard range – if you need one.

Your hospital fees cover everything for as long as you need to stay in hospital - so you won’t get any unexpected bills if, for clinical reasons, you need to stay longer than planned.

If you do need a prosthesis, the majority of people are advised by their consultant that a standard one will be fine. However, a small number of people are advised that for medical reasons a specialist prosthesis will be used. In these instances a fixed price* will still be given to you, but it may vary from the prices you see quoted on this site.

Even after you’ve left hospital, we’re here for you every step of the way, as long as you clinically need it. That means your fixed price* includes any physiotherapy or rehabilitation sessions as advised by your consultant as well as two weeks of medication to take home, any bandages and the removal of dressings or stitches.

Depending on your treatment, you may also have a follow-up consultation with your surgeon, which is also included in the fixed price*.

Should you need to return to hospital for a clinical reason, you won’t receive an additional bill.

For added peace of mind, any implant or prosthesis is covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. This means the cost of any surgery related to the implant or prosthesis is covered by the fixed price*.

Below are some frequently asked questions about paying for your own treatment.

How do I make an enquiry?

Our friendly private patient advisers will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Simply click on the enquiry button found at the top and bottom of this page. Or you can give us a call on 01603 255 614.

How do I make a booking?

Simply call us to make an initial appointment or to request a price.

Or just fill in the online enquiry form and we will get back to discuss booking a appointment.

How quickly can I be seen?

Most outpatient and diagnostic appointments are available within 7 days of your initial enquiry. However there may be occasions where appointments are available much sooner, or slightly after this time depending on consultant availability.

Do I have to be insured?

No. Paying for yourself with Spire is designed for people who do not have private health insurance, or whose insurance does not cover the treatment they need. It is a simple and manageable way to pay for private hospital treatment.

Am I still entitled to NHS care if I choose to pay for myself?

Yes. If you are eligible for healthcare in the UK you will continue to be eligible, regardless if you chose to pay for yourself privately.

Can I choose my consultant?

Yes, sometimes this is done in conjunction with your GP, however many patients opting for self-pay treatment can book directly with a consultant of their choice by calling us on 01603 255614. A small number of consultants require a GP referral letter before the initial consultation, and if this is the case, we will advise you of this when you call so you can arrange for the letter to be sent to us before your consultation.

You can use our consultant search above to view profiles of consultants working in our hospital.

Note that some consultants do not include their fees in our fixed price treatment and charge patients separately and at different rates. Your local hospital will be able to explain what is available to you.

Will I see the same consultant every time?

Yes. We know that continuity of care is important, which is why we do our utmost to ensure that the same consultant looks after you from your first appointment through to your treatment and follow-up care.

What happens if I’ve already seen a consultant at another hospital?

If you've already seen a consultant at an NHS or other private hospital and the same specialist can provide one-off private treatment at our hospital, we'll be happy to make all the arrangements for you.

Alternatively, we can arrange treatment under a new consultant at one of our hospitals. If you are changing your consultant, you may need a new referral letter from your GP.

What happens if I’m paying for myself as an outpatient?

Your consultant will send you a bill for the consultation and the hospital will charge you separately for any tests and treatment carried out.

What happens if I’m paying for myself as an in-patient?

If you are staying overnight or longer we will charge you a single, fixed price* where possible.

You will need to pay for your treatment in advance, however very occasionally (approximately 1% of patients) we are unable to offer treatment at an all-inclusive price due to medical circumstance. In this situation, we may offer you treatment under a ‘paying for yourself’ agreement, where you would pay a deposit to cover the expected costs of your care. At the end of your stay, we would invoice you for any additional care and services provided above the level of your deposit, or we would refund part of your deposit if your care costs were below those expected.

If I’m paying for myself, will I have a private room?

Yes. If you're a day case patient or staying overnight, or longer, you'll have your own private room with TV, radio, telephone, wifi and en-suite bathroom. Every room is equipped with a nurse call system, so you can get help at any time, day or night.

What’s included in the fixed price?

The one-off private treatment price will include your operation or procedure, standard prosthesis (if required), consultants' fees, nursing care, accommodation, physiotherapy and medication, after-care, a follow-up appointment (if you need it) and further treatment that may arise if there are clinical complications.
The price does not include your initial consultations and any tests, scans and investigations you may need before you come into hospital. At the time of your consultation we will also be able to tell you the price for any tests, scans, investigations that your consultant recommends.
Once you have confirmed that you wish to go ahead and have seen your chosen specialist for an initial consultation and been able to discuss your test, scan or investigation, we will arrange a treatment date and we will ask you to pay the fixed price in full before admission.

Please be sure to read our terms and conditions, which explains in detail what is included and excluded in your fixed price treatment.

Is the price always fixed?

We are able to give fixed prices to most of our patients, and fixed prices can be given on all treatments with the exception of bariatric (weight loss surgery) procedures that are priced on an individual basis depending on the individual healthcare needs of our patients. Please contact your local hospital to find out more.

How can I pay?

We accept payment by cash, cheque, bankers’ draft, credit card or debit cards.

Contact us directly on 01603 255 609, or call Spire accounts receivable department on 0845 600 5246 and select option 1.

When do I need to pay?

We need to receive payment in full at least five working days before your admission date. However, if you choose to pay by personal cheque, we need to receive this at least seven working days before your admission to allow time for your cheque to clear.
