Hip replacement: your procedure

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be shown to one of our 42 large, bright private rooms.

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge while you have your operation.

Here’s what will happen once you arrive at Spire London East for your hip replacement operation:

  • You’ll meet your surgery team and anaesthetist
  • You'll have either a general anaesthetic, where you’re unconscious, or an epidural or spinal anaesthetic, where you're numb from the waist down
  • If you have an epidural or spinal anaesthetic, your anaesthetist can also give you a sedative to help you relax
  • Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in your hip, remove both the socket and the top of your thigh bone and replace them with a new artificial hip joint

The hip replacement procedure usually takes an hour to an hour and a half. Head to our main hip replacement surgery page to learn more about the process.

Hip replacement surgery: your recovery

Once your operation is finished, you’ll be taken back to your private room to start your recovery. Your comfortable room will include:

  • Armchair
  • TV
  • WiFi
  • Window

You can expect to be with us for two to five days.

You may feel some discomfort and swelling at first, which is completely normal. We’ll give you pain relief to help you and make sure you’re comfortable. When you’re ready, your physiotherapist will help you get up and about.

For safety, check with your consultant before:

  • Playing sport
  • Driving – you should be able to do an emergency stop without discomfort (it’s also important to check with your motor insurance company first)
  • Returning to work

After a few weeks, you’ll return to Spire London East for a follow-up appointment, so your consultant can check that your hip is healing correctly, your recovery is on track and you’re managing any remaining discomfort.
