Endometriosis Clinic at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals

02 March 2020

Spire Edinburgh Hospitals is delighted to announce that the Endometriosis Clinic, which opened in June 2019 at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital, is now an accredited BSGE Endometriosis Centre.

Endometriosis is one of the most common causes of pelvic pain in young women. There are 1.5 million women who suffer from endometriosis in the UK*, which equates to 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. Endometriosis is difficult to diagnose and treat; for this reason the centre was formed by a multidisciplinary team including:

  • Dr Paul Dewart as a BSGE accredited Advanced Recto-vaginal Endometriosis Surgeon
  • Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynae-Oncologist Dr Cameron Martin
  • Consultant Colorectal Surgeon Mr Mark Potter
  • Consultant Urologist Miss Voula Granitsiotis
  • Consultant Anaesthetist and Pain Specialist Dr John Wilson
  • Nurse Specialists Mrs Helen Dewart and Mrs Jennifer Devlin

The Endometriosis Clinic is an integral part of the Endometriosis Centre, providing an opportunity for patients to see an Endometriosis Consultant and Nurse Specialist during the same consultation appointment. These appointments are 40 minutes in duration, allowing patients the time to explore their needs and expectations, to plan investigations and discuss treatment options; including medical, surgical and alternative therapies.

Many women with endometriosis have found that talking to others with the disease has helped them learn from their experiences, understand treatments and coping methods, and subsequently get a better understanding of endometriosis. Patient support groups have become a powerful and effective force, working closely with doctors, clinicians and scientists to further awareness and encourage research into endometriosis in the hopes of finding more effective ways of diagnosing and treating this debilitating disease. We have close links with the local support groups in Edinburgh and West Lothian as well as Endometriosis UK.

If a patient wishes to be seen at the clinic, a GP referral is always our preferred option because it provides continuity of care and background information which can be very helpful. However, if a patient is self-funding and unable to obtain a GP referral they can still make an appointment at the Endometriosis Clinic and our consultants are happy to see them. The clinic is suitable for any patient diagnosed with or suspected of having endometriosis.

Clinics are held Monday evenings at Shawfair Park Hospital. Both patients who are self-funding or have private medical insurance are welcome. For more information or to book an appointment call 0131 316 2507.
