Step by step

We believe in making things easy and straight forward, so we've outlined the steps in booking and paying for your treatment below.

Book an appointment

Accessing our hospitals is quick and easy. You can also book an outpatient appointment by contacting us directly on 0131 316 2507.  Some of our consultants may require you to have a referral from your GP.  Our self pay advisors are here to help you find the best consultant for you and answer any questions you might have.

When you come to us you’ll have an initial consultation with your chosen specialist to discuss your condition.  To aid your diagnosis your consultant may advise you that you require tests, scans or investigations.  Please note that the initial consultation and any tests, scans and investigations will be charged separately to any possible treatment costs.

Once the consultant has discussed your diagnosis, they will advise you of the treatment options available to you.  Our self pay team will be able to give you a fixed price*, which will cover all of your costs relating to your treatment from this point on.

*Please read Spire’s terms and conditions for full details of what’s included and excluded in your fixed price treatment.

A single, fixed price*

We believe in making things simple and straightforward. Please call our self pay advisors on 0131 316 2507.

That’s why once your consultant has discussed the treatment you need, we offer you a single, fixed price* for your treatment so there are no surprises. That way you can focus on your recovery and rest assured you pay the price you’re given, with no hidden charges.

This price covers all costs relating to your care from that point on and is made up of your surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist fees, hospital fees such as nursing, accommodation, food, etc. and the price of any necessary prosthesis from our standard range – if you need one.

Your hospital fees cover everything for as long as you need to stay in hospital - so you won’t get any unexpected bills if, for clinical reasons, you need to stay longer than planned.

If you do need a prosthesis, the majority of people are advised by their consultant that a standard one will be fine. However, a small number of people are advised that for medical reasons a specialist prosthesis will be used. In these instances a fixed price* will still be given to you, but it may vary from the prices you see quoted on this site.

Even after you’ve left hospital, we’re here for you every step of the way, as long as you clinically need it. That means your fixed price* includes any physiotherapy or rehabilitation sessions as advised by your consultant as well as two weeks of medication to take home, any bandages and the removal of dressings or stitches.

Depending on your treatment, you may also have a follow-up consultation with your surgeon, which is also included in the fixed price*.

Should you need to return to hospital for a clinical reason relating to your treatment, you won’t receive an additional bill.

For added peace of mind, any implant or prosthesis is covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. This means the cost of any surgery related to the implant or prosthesis is covered by the fixed price*.

Am I still entitled to NHS care if I choose to pay for myself?

Yes. If you are eligible for healthcare in the UK you will continue to be eligible, regardless if you chose to pay for yourself privately.

Are all treatments and operations available if I’m paying for myself?

Yes. All 38 of our hospitals have the expertise to carry out a wide range of private procedures, tests, scans and investigations.

Following an initial consultation to determine an individual’s healthcare needs, all of our procedures are available to patients paying for themselves.

Can I choose my consultant?

Yes, you can book an outpatient appointment by contacting us directly on 0131 316 2507.  Some of our consultants may require you to have a referral from your GP and your GP may want to refer you to a specific consultant. Our self pay advisors are here to help you find the most appropriate consultant for you and answer any questions you might have.

You can use our consultant search above to view profiles of consultants working in our hospital.

Will I see the same consultant every time?

Yes. We know that continuity of care is important, which is why we do our utmost to ensure that the same consultant looks after you from your first appointment through to your treatment and follow-up care.

What happens if I’ve already seen a consultant at another hospital?

If you've already seen a consultant at an NHS or other private hospital and the same specialist can provide one-off private treatment at our hospital, we'll be happy to make all the arrangements for you.

Alternatively, we can arrange treatment under a new consultant at one of our hospitals. If you are changing your consultant, you may need a new referral letter from your GP so that the new consultant has any information regarding previous test or episodes of care.

What happens if I’m paying for myself as an outpatient?

Spire Edinburgh Hospitals has introduced a combined billing system for the hospital, consultants and other consultant initiated diagnostic charges. If your consultant is using this combined billing system you will receive an invoice from Spire Edinburgh Hospitals only. If your consultant is not using this combined billing system you will receive an invoice separately from the consultant for consultancy fees and any related consultant diagnostic charges.

When you make your initial appointment we will also ask for your credit/debit card details.  If the consultant uses our combined billing system and/or a diagnostic test or scan was performed at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals, we will send you a detailed invoice and seven days later your credit/debit card will be charged.

What happens if I’m paying for myself as an in-patient or daycase?

If you are staying overnight or longer we will charge you a single, fixed price* where possible.

You will need to pay for your treatment in advance, however very occasionally (approximately 1% of patients) we are unable to offer treatment at an all-inclusive price due to medical circumstance. In this situation, we may offer you treatment under a ‘paying for yourself’ agreement, where you would pay a deposit to cover the expected costs of your care. At the end of your stay, we would invoice you for any additional care and services provided above the level of your deposit, or we would refund part of your deposit if your care costs were below those expected.

To pay for treatment at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals, we accept payment by cash, credit card or debit cards. Cheque and bankers’ draft are also accepted, payment by these methods are required 7 days prior to admission.

If you have chosen to finance your treatment through our carefully chosen partner, Zebra Finance, your loan will be directly paid to Spire Edinburgh Hospitals.

What’s included in the fixed price?

The one-off private treatment price will include your operation or procedure, standard prosthesis (if required), consultants' fees, nursing care, accommodation, physiotherapy and medication, after-care, a follow-up appointment (if you need it) and further treatment that may arise if there are clinical complications.

The price does not include your initial consultation and any tests, scans and investigations you may need before you come into hospital. At the time of your consultation we will also be able to tell you the price for any tests, scans, investigations that your consultant recommends.

Once you have confirmed that you wish to go ahead and have seen your chosen specialist for an initial consultation and been able to discuss your test, scan or investigation, we will arrange a treatment date and we will ask you to pay the fixed price* in full before admission.

Please be sure to read our terms and conditions, which explains in detail what is included and excluded in your fixed price* treatment.

If you require any further information, please call our self pay team on 0131 316 2507.
