- Rapid recovery and renewed quality of life following TURP surgery under Consultant Urologist Mr Rono Mukherjee
Andy Mills, a retired 63 year old formerly a Post Office Counters Project Manager from Warrington described the care he received at Spire Cheshire Hospital as “first class from start to finish” after undergoing a successful prostate procedure that restored his quality of life within hours.
Andy, a keen cyclist and runner underwent a Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) procedure under the care of Consultant Urologist Mr Rono Mukherjee after experiencing severe urinary symptoms that required catheterisation for several weeks. Andy said, “I am a very active cyclists and runner, and both these activities were severely compromised.”
Mr Mukherjee said, “Andy had an MRI scan which confirmed an 80 mL prostate but no signs of prostate cancer. As an active cyclist and otherwise fit and well, he was very keen to get his catheter removed as soon as possible via surgery.”
Prior to surgery, Andy said his condition had significantly affected both his physical activity and mental wellbeing. “I’m a very active person, and suddenly I couldn’t cycle or run. Sleep was disrupted, daily life was restricted, and it began to take its toll mentally as well as physically,” he said.
Although initially admitted through the NHS, Andy was advised that waiting times for his procedure could be between six and twelve months. Concerned about the ongoing impact on his wellbeing, he decided to pursue treatment privately as a self-paying patient.
“From my first consultation with Mr Mukherjee, I felt completely reassured. He was calm, professional and clearly very experienced. He explained everything thoroughly and gave me full confidence that I was in safe hands, plus he had excellent ‘bedside manner’. I felt he really cared about me.”
Andy described his overall experience at Spire Cheshire Hospital as exceptional.
“Every single member of staff was kind, considerate and supportive, nothing was too much trouble. From the nurses who cared for me day and night, to the catering team who even brought me a sandwich at 3am when I hadn’t eaten for over 24 hours, the compassion shown was remarkable.”
“The anaesthetist and theatre team were incredibly reassuring at a moment when I was understandably anxious. Even the housekeeping staff were warm and supportive. It genuinely felt like everyone cared.”
The results of the procedure were almost immediate.
“I noticed improvement within 12 hours of surgery. Once the catheter was removed, I felt great relief as I was able to go to the toilet with no discomfort after a whole month, that was a huge moment. I felt better straight away, physically and mentally.”
Andy’s recovery continues to progress well, and he is looking forward to returning to cycling and running in the coming weeks.
“It’s the simple things that make the biggest difference, better sleep, renewed confidence, even being able to wear normal clothes again. The procedure has given me back a sense of freedom and normality.”

Mr Rono Mukherjee said, “benign prostate enlargement can significantly affect a person’s quality of life, including sleep, daily activities and emotional wellbeing. TURP remains a highly effective treatment option for appropriate patients, and it is always rewarding to see someone regain their confidence and normal routine so quickly.”
Spire Cheshire Hospital offers specialist urology services including consultation, diagnostics and surgical treatment delivered by experienced consultants and multidisciplinary teams.
For Andy, the outcome has been transformative. “I cannot thank Mr Mukherjee and the entire team enough. The care wasn’t just clinically excellent, it was personal, compassionate and truly outstanding.”
