Mr Martin Brett
Consultant General and Gastro-Intestinal Surgeon
MB BS, MA, FRCS, ChM
I have been a consultant general gastro-intestinal surgeon for 23 years specialising in upper gastro-intestinal surgery. I have extensive experience of abdominal hernia repair including inguinal, femoral, umbilical and ventral hernias. Techniques used include laparoscopic repair as well as open. I carry out some hernia repairs under local anaesthetic.
Throughout my career I have carried out general paediatric surgery and specialise in procedures for phimosis, inguinal hernia and testicular maldescent. I excise skin lumps and subcutaneous lumps (eg lipoma) under local or general anaesthetic. Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) is another interest. I treat oesophageal motility disorders such as cardial achalasia both surgically (laparoscopic Heller’s myotomy) and endoscopically.
I carry out gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) and have performed over 2,000, mostly laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones. However, I specialise in complex cases, including those with common bile duct stones.
Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a major interest. I provide a service for investigation (gastroscopy, oesophageal manometry, 24 hour oesophageal pH study) and surgical treatment (anti-reflux surgery). I have performed over 300 laparoscopic fundoplications for reflux as well as complex hiatus hernia repairs. I also manage reflux complications, such as oesophageal stricture and Barrett's oesophagus, endoscopically. I fulfil the JAG accreditation and quality requirements for gastroscopy.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Martin Brett at Spire include:
Surgery for gall stones and common bile duct stones, gastro-oesophageal reflux investigations and surgical treatment, minimal access surgery, hernia repair surgery, gastroscopy and children's surgery (circumcision, herniotomy, testicular maldescent) and skin lumps.
Spire Cheshire Hospital is only able to provide Covid-19 tests to patients undergoing surgery at our hospital. Covid-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service.
