Palpitations clinic

If you are suffering from heart palpitations we provide prompt access to some of the leading arrhythmia specialists in South Wales.

Palpitations or abnormal heart arrhythmia’s can be worrying, especially if you do not know why they occur. At Spire Cardiff Hospital we provide patients with prompt access to some of the leading arrhythmia specialists in South Wales.

What is an abnormal heart rhythm?

Palpitations are common and usually refer to a heart rate that is going too quickly and may be regular or irregular depending on the problem. Some individuals will have no underlying heart condition and the cause of their palpitations may be unclear. In many cases the palpitation is due to an abnormal heart rhythm which makes the heart beat too quickly.

Another term used to describe an abnormal heart rhythm is arrhythmia. Arrhythmia can be fast (tachycardia) or slow (bradycardia), regular or irregular. Arrhythmias can occur from some cardiovascular disease although in some cases may have no known cause.

Our consultants

Our consultants work at the University Hospital of Wales or Morriston Hospital, Swansea. These facilities are tertiary centres and therefore our consultants have a specialist interest in arrhythmia or palpitations, otherwise known as electrophysiology. We have four consultant cardiologists who specialise in electrophysiology and these can be viewed by selecting from the drop down box at the bottom of the page.

Why choose us?

The South Wales Heart Centre at Spire Cardiff Hospital is the leading provider of private cardiology in Wales. We pride ourselves on providing superior cardiac care to those who are experiencing heart palpitations.

We are able to diagnose your clinical symptoms with a number of out-patient and in-patient tests available in our state of the art diagnostic facilities. This includes cardiac monitoring equipment and electrophysiology studies undertaken in our cardiac catheterisation suite.

With something as important as your heart you will not want to wait for an appointment. That is why we have a wide variety of out-patient appointments which will hopefully fit with your requirements.

Once in your consultation, our specialist cardiologist will review your clinical symptoms and heart rhythm and find the right treatment option for you.

Treatment

To diagnose your arrhythmia there are a number of tests available such as echocardiogram, exercise ECG, heart rate monitor and cardiomemo recording. Once your arrhythmia has been diagnosed your consultant will discuss treatment options with you. This may simply mean medication to control the rhythm or your consultant may suggest electrophysiology treatments such as cardiac ablation.

No matter what the outcome you can be sure your consultant will take the time to fully explain your treatment options and allow you plenty of time to ask questions in order to make an informed decision. We understand the importance of finding a treatment that is right for you as an individual.
